Willow hasn’t been cancelled. It has been paused.

The other day, I wrote about Willow being cancelled. Well, apparently it hasn’t been cancelled – it has simply been paused. Whatever that means.

Scifi Ward wasn’t the only one to report this, and the story seems to have slightly irked Jon Kasdan. Kasdan, who is one of the writers and executive producers of the Willow TV show, spoke up on Twitter to set the records straight.

As a responsible science fiction publisher, it is only fair to set the records straight. The show hasn’t been cancelled, and a second season – Volume II – has already been written. It’s just that they aren’t going to be working on it for at least a year, so those involved might as well do other things.

According to Kasdan:

A decision was made last week to release our main cast for other series opportunities that may arise for them in the coming year. With all the tv and movies in production around the world, it feels unfair to limit an actor’s availability without a clear sense of when you’re going to need them again. It’s further trivialized by the simple reality that the scripts we’ve been working on require just as many actors (from our first season) with whom no such contractual hold exists.

So, not cancelled. Just delayed. He also says that this is something affecting the whole industry.  I have no reason to doubt the veracity of this. I just haven’t personally noticed it.

Due to forces much larger and more intricate than I would ever pretend to fully understand, production of streaming shows is slowing down across the entire industry, and Willow won’t resume filming in the next months.

You can read more of his tweet/letter by clicking on the link below. Or you can just watch the original movie. It’s a lot of fun.

If anything changes and Willow becomes ‘unpaused’, I will keep you updated. I might even get round to watching it.
