Where does Guardians of the Galaxy 3 rank?

I finally saw Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 the other day. Were all the character and story arcs resolved? More importantly, was it any good? Quick review – I thoroughly enjoyed it. I love the Guardians of the Galaxy, and if I had to pick a favourite Marvel trilogy, it would be this one.

A fitting farewell to the Guardians

I’m going to assume that you’ve seen the first two movies. If not, go watch them, they’re great. I can wait.

Welcome back. So what is the movie about? The main overarching story is that Rocket is injured, but when the Guardians try and heal him, they find a kill switch that stops them. So they need to go and sort that out. It’s fun tale and the antagonist is a good one. Especially for a Marvel movie. (Although Kurt Russel’s Ego was fun too.)

The normal sense of fun found in the other films runs throughout this one too. There is also the same sense of adventure, great music, and variety of settings we have all come to know and love. As a straightforward Guardians of the Galaxy adventure, it definitely ticks all the boxes.

But this is volume 3, touted as the final outing for the team. So we need to those character arcs resolved. And, by and large, they all are. Which is pretty damned impressive with such a large cast. Furthermore, things are all wrapped up in a way that means they could all come back and do exciting things in the Marvel universe in the future.

(SPOILER – We already know that Starlord will definitely be back, as it said so at the end.)

The only one who I think got the – ahem – short end of the stick, was Groot. I can’t remember if it was in the films or the comics, but he is supposed to be the last of his kind. At least probably. I can’t see him getting his own film, but maybe that will eventually be explored. He should definitely find a Miss Groot at some point.

Anyway, I posed a question about where this one ranks in terms of Guardians of the Galaxy movies. I loved it, but not as much as the first one. I think it’s a bit better than the second one, however, so I guess that puts it in second place.

To be honest, the question is a crap one, but I didn’t want to just say ‘review’ as I’m comparing it to the others. In terms of all Marvel movies then… tenth? Maybe eighth… I don’t know. It’s fun, so go and see it.
