Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

Go Jedi!

I finished Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order a couple of days ago and still feeling sad about that. It is a great game and I am struggling to find something as satisfying and engrossing to fill my Sunday gaming afternoons.

Story

The story follows a previous Jedi padawan called Cal Kestis five years after the events of Star Wars 3: Revenge of the Sith. At the end of that film there is the infamous Order 66 and nearly all Jedi are killed. So too are the younglings and padawan. (I don’t know if padawan is a collective noun but for some reason it sounds like it should be.) Cal Kestis has since been in hiding but at the beginning of the game his cover is blown and he is thrust into an exciting adventure.

Gameplay

As lots of reviews have stated, it is a combination of Dark Souls and Uncharted. Happily, it isn’t as difficult as the former but the combat is equally satisfying. Most importantly, wielding your lightsaber is a whole lot of fun. It is so satisfying reflecting laser beams back at stormtroopers but it gets even better when you face someone else with a similar weapon. As an ex-trainee Jedi you are pretty fantastic but not invincible. Generally, combat is a massive plus in the game and is really enjoyable.

The levels are really well designed and progress is satisfying. A minor downside for me, but not for everyone, is that you come back to the same area and redo some of the same stuff later in the game when you have more abilities. I spent a lot of time dying and trying to reach certain areas without realising for quite a while that it was impossible. As a gamer, you know that a ledge or rope is there for a reason and so there is a lot of time trying to reach the sodding thing before it dawns that actually, this is probably a thing for later in the game. You will also need to revisit certain area to open all the boxes that are hidden around but sometimes you might find yourself crossing a level to get one only to find it is a new poncho you don’t like.

Having said that, when you return to an area, you will have more abilities so will be able to have an even more fun killing everything. So it is not much of a gripe.

Worth buying?

Absolutely yes, especially if you are a Star Wars fan. Even if not, it is still a great game. I mentioned previously that I am going through a massive Star Wars phase right now and this game was a superb addition with no micro-transactions or online stuff. Just good old-fashioned solo adventure. The chance to play a Jedi in a good game is rare – nothing since the Knights of the Old Republic has been as good. Good this game is. Buy it you should.
