The Mandalorian reviews are in…
A few days ago we got the latest trailer for the Disney+ Star Wars live action TV show, the Mandalorian. And it was awesome. So before I proceed, in case you missed it, here it is, with a voice over from the always great Werner Herzog (first trailer is here):
I love the bounty hunters in Star Wars. I also love the characters that are a bit shady and operate on the fringes of Star Wars society. Han Solo and Boba Fett (who was also a Mandalorian) are cooler and generally more awesome than any passionate Rebel or Empire leader and are certainly more interesting than the average Jedi. Although the Sith are pretty cool.
The aesthetic that seems to be set up here is a bit ‘space western’. As Firefly has shown, that is a great sub-genre. Also, if you haven’t seen it, check out Outlander with Sean Connery – I haven’t seen it for a while but I loved that film. So a space western with aliens that explores the Star Wars universe and isn’t all about Jedis… yup, I’m in. I am hoping for Rogue One mixed with Firefly and a dash of the ‘The man with no name’ trilogy with Clint Eastward.
So a load of critics have seen 27 minutes of the Mandalorian and… drumroll… they loved it. Which should be a relief but I remember critics giving ‘The Last Jedi’ 91% on Rotten Tomatoes and have since started to doubt them. After all, if they slag it off, they might not get to preview the next Disney/ Star Wars offering. Whereas if they praise it, they get quoted and publicise themselves when idiots like me post Youtube clips that feature their names. I guess I am now part of the problem but as Han Solo would say, “Fuck it, I don’t care.”
