The first five minutes of Jurassic World: Dominion
I’m a sucker for dinosaurs and I am clearly not alone as the sixth Jurassic Park movie is on the way.
I remember reading the original Jurassic Park novel by the awesome Michael Crichton back in 1990 and then getting ridiculously excited that they were making a movie about it. Happily, the film was great and dinosaurs looked superb thanks to the amazing advances in something called CGI. It was a simple yet heady time to be alive.
Jurassic World: Dominion seems to be about dinosaurs who have finally been let loose on world. It is a premise that was hinted at right at the end of the first film, with pterodactyls flying around and everyone banging on about ‘life will find a way’ and a sexy Jeff Goldblum talking about chaos theory the whole time.
In the second film of the original trilogy, there was the whole weird tacked-on bit with a T-Rex wandering around suburbia. It felt like it was just added after the script was finished by producers who thought it would look cool. To be fair, they were right. It added nothing to the movie, threw off the pacing, but was great. In fact, it really made you wonder how exciting it would be if loads of dinosaurs were loose everywhere.
The third film… nah, I’m kidding. I can’t really remember it. I think it was called Jurassic Park 3 and had dinosaurs in it. I remember it was more fun than the critics said but it was definitely as forgettable as they mentioned.
Anyway. Jurassic World: Dominion looks great. It feels weirdly like a return to the first film, I just can’t quite explain why. Watch the trailer below and see what you think.
I do feel like the whole Jurassic Park idea is that something dangerous has arrived, humanity tried to contain it, but due to chaos theory and life finding a way, we fail and now we have to learn to live with it. It’s like an analogy for Covid. Crichton was prescient.
Below is the first five minutes of the film. Apparently, according to Wikipedia, this clip – called The Prologue: Jurassic World Dominion – was first shown before F9 in IMAX theatres back in June. Given the whole pandemic thing, I think most people missed it. So, a couple of days ago, it was released on YouTube. I think it looks great. Enjoy.
