Spiderman: Far from Home
Spiderman: Far from Home just came up on my Netflix last night, so I watched it having somehow missed it in the cinema. Being Marvel it was predictable in that it was a lot of fun, highly entertaining, had great action sequences, good characters and story arcs, and a load of hints and links to the overall MCU. I don’t know how they manage to be so damned consistent but kudos to all involved.
I love Spiderman, I don’t know why. As a kid in the 70s there was a TV show that I watched avidly. I also read the comics. Like Batman, there is something about the character that appeals to me. As a fan, I was not disappointed.
An added bonus about Spiderman: Far from Home is that it is set in Europe in a lot of places that I have been. I don’t know why having a film set in a place you know well is exciting, but it is. The story involves a class trip through Europe while some elementals (bad but huge creatures) start trashing European locations. They are being fought by a mysterious man called Mysterio, who is apparently a dimension-travelling warrior with an sad back story. Of course if you have read any of the comics, some of the twists may not be such a shock.
The film briefly passes through Austria, Berlin and the Netherlands – all of which I recommend. The majority of the action sections and time are spent in Prague, Venice and London (my home town), all of which I have been to multiple times because they are awesome. I was actually in Venice a few months ago for the Venice Biennale and had lunch and beers in the square where there’s a big fight. I am not saying all this to gloat – although I am a lot – but also because it is nice to see some of my favourite places on the big screen. Europe is an amazing continent.
There is not a lot to say about this that I haven’t already mentioned – Spiderman: Far from Home is great fun and Tom Holland continues to be a superb Peter Parker. So this is a pretty shit review and can be summed up as: If you are a Spiderman fan watch it and if you are a Marvel fan and somehow missed it (like I did) then it is a good one and also shows what happens to the world after Endgame.
So, in summary, it’s great. Go Spidey.
