Save The Expanse
I have made no secret of being a huge fan of the Expanse series – both the books and the TV show. Here is my review of Leviathan Wakes from six years ago. The books continue to be superb (I am coincidentally reading Persepolis Rising right now) but the brilliant TV version is now in danger of cancellation because Syfy channel likes are annoying.
Even though it has consistently very high ratings (actually increasing with currently 100% on Rotten Tomatoes) and an ever-growing audience, Syfy has decided to cancel it. I used to work for them and the vast majority of the programs were to do with two-headed sharks or giant crocodiles or killer yeti or whatever. It seems to be what they prefer. I read an article recently that talks about why Dark Matter was cancelled and Killjoys was not. Both have similar ratings and demographics and viewership. Apparently, it is down to the fact that Syfy made Killjoys themselves and therefore have the rights when it goes to Netflix or Amazon or wherever. Whereas Dark Matter, like the Expanse, was made by someone else. It does beg the question as to why Syfy bothers in the first place if they cancel stuff that continues to do well. I will no longer watch anything on that network because of this and I am overjoyed that Game of Thrones was made by someone else. Also, I have Netflix.
In fact, I am about to rewatch the whole Expanse show again on Netflix and I advise and implore you to do the same (it is on Amazon too). Because there is a campaign afoot #SaveTheExpanse. Unlike back in the dark days when great shows like Firefly were cancelled, there is actually a pretty decent chance that someone like Netflix or Amazon will buy the show and continue to make it. Which would be awesome. If lots of people watch it and talk about it, the networks might realise how bloody superb and worthwhile it would be to keep the show going. So join the campaign while treating yourself to one of the best science fiction shows on TV. #SaveTheExpanse.
