PS5 top 6 most anticipated science fiction and fantasy games

PS5 has so much to look forward to.

I should preface this PS5 game list by pointing out that these are my personal most anticipated scifi and fantasy releases. There is no democracy here. Having said that, these are likely to be at the top of anyone’s list because they are going to be great.

Before I begin, here is an advert from Rick and Morty! God I love Rick and Morty.

Honorable mentions

The 6 games I have picked are from studios that have brought out good games before. With one exception as you will see.

I am ridiculously excited about Spiderman: Miles Morales but that is out already and looks amazing.

Godfall and Immortals Fenyx Rising both look intriguing. Godfall doesn’t have the best reviews and I will wait and see what people say about Immortals.

There are also updates/rereleases for Borderlands 3, Demon’s Souls and Devil May Cry 5. All of which you have probably played already, so you know they are good. These will just be shinier with barely any load times. Which is a good thing but not exactly ‘anticipated’.

Deathloop looks intriguing and I really enjoyed Dishonored 2 but again, I will wait and see.

Ok. Let’s crack on.

6. Hogwarts Legacy

I mentioned earlier that there was one entry on this list that doesn’t have a rich history of awesomeness. Hogwarts Legacy is an action RPG by a developer who doesn’t exactly have much of a glowing history, but it is published by Warner Games who did the Batman series. So it might be good.

This isn’t even available for preorder but if you want more info this links to the official website. The site has this bit of background:

Experience Hogwarts in the 1800s. Your character is a student who holds the key to an ancient secret that threatens to tear the wizarding world apart. You have received a late acceptance to the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and soon discover that you are no ordinary student: you possess an unusual ability to perceive and master Ancient Magic. Only you can decide if you will protect this secret for the good of all, or yield to the temptation of more sinister magic.

There isn’t a release date yet but 2021 looks likely. It is not PS5 exclusive, it should also be out on X box series X and PC.

I must admit, I wasn’t all that excited about a Hogwarts game (although I loved the books) but the trailer actually looks pretty cool. Here it is:

5. Resident Evil 8

Generally speaking, the Resident Evil games are great. They can be a bit hit and miss but generally, they hit. I recently finished the remastered RE2 and it was great. The trailer came out months ago but other than that we just have the blurb from their website:

Years after the tragic events of Resident Evil 7 biohazard, Ethan Winters has started over with his wife Mia, finally living in peace and putting the past behind them. However, Chris Redfield, the legendary hero from previous Resident Evil games, suddenly disrupts their life, throwing a devastated Ethan into a new and twisted nightmare in search of answers.

It is definitely coming to the PS5 soonish. I suspect 2021. It looks pretty fun and RE7 was enjoyable.

4. Final Fantasy XVI

I love the Final Fantasy games and they should look great on the PS5. Final Fantasy XVI will most likely be out in 2021 and the trailer looks great. This looks like a return to a more fantasy setting which is a good thing. It still has chocobos and boy band hair, so that’s consistent.

You can check out the website here. They report that the next bit of information will be released in 2021. Which is pretty damned vague. Here is a trailer:

3. Elder Scrolls 6

Skyrim was one of my all-time favourite games. Huge and epic and full of bugs, it was awesome. I played through it twice – second time in VR. Well, predictably, there is going to be an Elder Scrolls 6. At some point. There isn’t a release date or even a proper trailer.

There is a release announcement video thing. It came out 2 years ago, so I guess they are taking their time. Which is probably a good thing. Hopefully making a purely single-player game with no microtransactions. Here is that announcement video which still somehow got me excited:

2. Horizon Forbidden West

It was so tough putting this in second place as I absolutely adored Horizon Zero Dawn (the complete version of the original game is just $9). It wasn’t just a fun game, it also had a superb story with great characters. And giant dinosaur robots, let’s not forget that!

Here is the blurb:

Horizon Forbidden West continues the story of Aloy, a young huntress of the Nora tribe sent on a quest to the arcane frontier known as the Forbidden West to find the source of a mysterious plague that kills all it infects. On her journey across these uncharted lands, Aloy encounters hostile regions ravaged by massive storms and occupied by dangerous enemies and deadly machines. She also discovers a vast array of environments and ecosystems, including lush valleys, dry deserts, snowy mountains, tropical beaches and ruined cities, both above and below the water.

Like so many on this list, the estimated release date is 2021. This is presumably because 2020 has been designated as an awful year for everything.

Here is the trailer and a bit of info:

1. Cyberpunk 2077

I am so ridiculously excited for this game and have been since I first posted the original amazing trailer back in 2013. Cyberpunk 2077 is set in a futuristic city and it looks absolutely epic. It is made by CD Project Red who made The Witcher 3, one of my top games of all time. Here is the blurb:

Cyberpunk 2077 is an open-world, action-adventure story set in Night City, a megalopolis obsessed with power, glamour and body modification. You play as V, a mercenary outlaw going after a one-of-a-kind implant that is the key to immortality. You can customize your character’s cyberware, skillset and playstyle, and explore a vast city where the choices you make shape the story and the world around you.

It is due out on the 10th December – two weeks away. Probably. It has been delayed a lot but it seems close. It will only be on PS4 at first but if you have a PS5 you can play the PS4 version and everything will be extra shiny with hardly any load times.

A proper PS5 version is due out next year. Which means I will probably be playing it twice. More information can be found on the official website.

You can preorder it here. Here is a trailer.

So there you go. Six superb new games all due on the PS5. The next issue for most of us is when we can get one. I need to finish a ton games before Cyberpunk 2077 comes out so I will sign off. Exciting times ahead.
