Prisoners of the Ghostland looks insane. And fun.
The Prisoners of Ghostland trailer popped up on my YouTube yesterday. The algorithm decided it was something I might enjoy. The algorithm knows all – this looks fucking great.
The premise is this:
In the treacherous frontier city of Samurai Town, a ruthless bank robber (Nicolas Cage) is sprung from jail by wealthy warlord The Governor (Bill Moseley), whose adopted granddaughter Bernice (Sofia Boutella) has gone missing. The Governor offers the prisoner his freedom in exchange for retrieving the runaway. Strapped into a leather suit that will self-destruct within five days, the bandit sets off on a journey to find the young woman-and his own path to redemption.
Clear? Good. The Prisoners of Ghostland is Japanese filmaker Sion Sono’s first English language movie. His previous films have all been ridiculously well received and they are all a bit nuts. Here is his Wikipedia entry. It is much easier for you to read that if you’re interested, than for me to try and explain.
Judging by the trailer, The Prisoners of Ghostland is like the bastard child of Escape from New York (of which I am a huge fan) and Zardoz, directed by David Cronenberg. It has cult classic written all over over. Obviously, if you want to do crazy, you get Nicholas Cage. I am a huge fan Nicholas Cage, so this is a good call.
Without further ado, here’s the trailer. I can’t wait to watch this (and I think it is out soon). Enjoy.
