New Lost in Space TV show
Many moons ago – aka the latter half of the 90s – I worked for MTV in London. I did broadcast TV in a room with a huge wall of screens, one of which could be programmed to accept the Scifi channel. (Now known as the Syfy channel because back then they didn’t predict the corporate world would be so petty and crap.) It was a glorious time for the Scifi channel, with double original Twilight Zone followed by Lost in Space every morning. I am only really mentioning MTV to justify my watching every episode of a show that remained kind of fun but grew increasingly fucking daft as it went on.
Lost in Space told the story of the Robinsons, who crash land on a planet and are, er, lost. They were a mother and father, two older daughters, a younger boy called Will, Dr Smith, Major West and a robot called The Robot. It has been a couple of decades but I remember loving the show even though it ended up being a vaguely ludicrous affair with most episodes being about Will, Dr Smith and The Robot. Usually with Dr Smith being a dick and featuring some actors in unconvincing alien outfits. It was a glorious way to start a working day.
Then there was a Lost in Space film with Joey from Friends which had a fun theme tune but a really, really annoying cute little creature in it. I vaguely remember the cast being ok but that stupid little alien is all I can remember and frankly, it ruined the film for me and it has now been deleted entirely from my brain.
So the time is ripe for a remake and as is so often the case these days, it will be a more gritty version made for Netflix. To be fair, if they continued on with the mood, direction and ideas from the original series, it would have to be a weird comedy about an eccentric old man who hangs around with a 9-year-old kid and a robot. So probably not advisable.
The trailer looks good and intriguing but then most trailers do these days, so it is meaningless. I will definitely be giving it a go though. Lost in Space is due to air on Netflix on the 13th April 2018. Here is the meaningless trailer:
