Mistborn: The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson
Mistborn: The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson has been on my reading list for ages. I wish I had read it sooner but on the plus side, I now have lots of lovely catching up to do. In fact, I think there must have been a sale on at some point because the moment I finished this, I went to buy the next and found I already owned the entire series. I had bought them years ago.
The reason I got round to reading them was prompted by a series of YouTube lectures that Sanderson gave at a university. I wrote about them here. If you haven’t seen them they are really worth checking out as they are awesome. In the lecture, he talks a lot about the first Misborn book and so I had to hit pause and go and read it.
The story follows a young lady called Vin who gets recruited into a thieving gang. Not just any gang either, these guys are legends. They are led by the even more legendary Kelsier, the Survivor. The good guys are planning a heist and it’s a pretty major one – they essentially plan to steal an entire empire – the Final Empire. It is a pretty cool set up and idea.
The characters are superb and really relatable. The world is great and a bit grim. The magic system is absolutely superb. There are actually two magic systems in the book but the main one available to our heroes and other Mistborn is called Allomancy. It involves metals and is really well thought out.
I am not going to beat around the bush here. I absolutely loved Mistborn: Final Empire and highly recommend it anyone who even vaguely likes the fantasy genre. It is chock full of action and cool stuff. Some of the creatures that inhabit the world are brilliant. I can’t wait to read the rest of the series.
You can buy book one on the link below and I strongly suggest you do. I am officially now a Sanderson fan.
