Dawn of the Planet of the Apes trailer

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

I seem to be having a bit of a trailer bonanza here at the moment. I blame the movie/TV industry for releasing a lot of good looking stuff. The last trailer was for Star Wars: Rebels, which is a kid’s thing on Disney that may or may not be relatively fun, it’s hard to tell.

This new trailer for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes however, looks fucking awesome! It is the sequel to Rise of the Planet of the Apes which was brilliant. So this probably will be too because er… sequels are erm… often as good as the originals… um.

Actually, I’m perpetuating a myth. There are tons of sequels as good as the original, if not better. To name a few in just the scifi genre: Empire Strikes Back, Mad Max 2, Aliens (first one was excellent but completely different), Blade 2, Superman 2, Star Trek 2, Evil Dead 2, Dawn of the Dead, the Dark Knight, Spiderman 2, and so on.

If you include the original five Planet of the Apes movies, then I can confidently predict that this new one will be at least in the top 3. So with that proved, here is the new trailer for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes:

Star Wars: Rebels

 Star Wars Rebels

Star Wars Rebels

For a brief second I was a bit shocked by the news that Disney had bought Star Wars but then I remembered that they had been responsible for all the recent Marvel movies. They also made Tron: Legacy which wasn’t very good (and I have forgotten everything that happens in it already) but it looked and sounded great. The first Pirates of the Caribbean was fun and – I don’t care what you say – I even enjoyed John Carter of Mars (the books were pretty daft but enjoyable too, in case you are bored).

So why not let them do Star Wars? It’s not like Lucas was going to steer the series to a dark and brooding universe. I have more faith in someone involved with The Avengers than I do with someone involved with Ewoks or Jarjar or Darth crying ‘Noooooooooo!’ I know they are kids films but if you are old enough to have watched the original trilogy (not including bastard Ewoks) you will understand how disappointing the new trilogy was. Not to mention the constant tinkering / ruining of the originals. Han shot first! If you saw the newer films first then you are approaching the series from a different mindset and are probably wrong about everything relating to Star Wars.

This mild, heavily edited rant brings me nicely to Star Wars: Rebels. It is animated, you know, for kids. Or Young Adults – whatever they are. It teeters dangerously close to being a bit too childlike  and cutesy but it could be fun and might help fill in the time until Star Wars VII comes out. On the other hand it might make you feel sick and anxious about the direction it is all taking. A feeling I got the first time I watched an Ewok defeat a helmeted soldier of a galaxy-conquering army by dropping some rocks on his/her head.

Alright, I’ll lighten up. This is for the kids out there. Here is the trailer:

Jupiter Ascending trailer

Jupiter Ascending

Jupiter Ascending

The new Jupiter Ascending Trailer is here and it actually looks like it might be pretty good. But as it is impossible to tell how good a film is from a trailer these days, I will reserve judgement. (I’m looking at you, Burton’s Planet of the Apes, and the Wachowski’s Matrix 2 & 3, and, obviously, Prometheus.)

This could, however, be a good trailer for a good film. Just try and ignore the pointy ears thing. Enjoy.

‘They Live’ selfie

This has been all over the interweb all day, so you have probably already seen it. Some genius has wisely spent his/her time parodying the Ellen selfie taken at the Oscars by changing it to a ‘They Live’ version.

By the way, if you haven’t seen ‘They Live’ you should. I would review it but frankly it needs little more said about it than – it’s brilliant. John Carpenter at his almost finest. Go and watch it now. Review done.

Robocop trailer 2

Robocop

Robocop

This is the second trailer for the Robocop reboot. I know that sentence doesn’t exactly scream ‘Wow, here’s something new and exciting’ but it does actually look pretty damn cool and I felt it needed to be shared here. I am fairly confident that the new Robocop will be the best one since the original but frankly, that should’t be too hard. The Verhoeven version will remain a classic of violence, humour and general awesomeness. But I see no reason why the new Robocop can’t forge its own exciting new franchise, and this trailer looks damned good fun. At least now it seems marginally harder to shoot Murphy (Robocop) in the face, which was a design flaw in the original film that bugged the hell out of me as it just seemed so bloody obvious. Now he can, er, tilt his head a bit.

Anyway, here is the trailer. Apologies for the delay.

Kung Fury

KUNG FURY!

KUNG FURY!

I seem to be supporting a lot of stuff on Kickstarter these days but sometimes it just has to be done. Especially when something as mental as Kung Fury comes along! Think 80s. Think Hitler, viking chicks, time travel and machine guns. (Apart from Hitler I am usually thinking along those lines anyway.)

The Kickstarter page is here. They only want $200,000 and have $376,527 (at time of writing) with 25 days to go. So it looks like Kung Fury will be a reality.

Now watch the genius that is Kung Fury. Ahhh the 80s…

Transcendence

Transcendence

Transcendence

This is Transendence the new Johnny Depp film, not a step by step about how to become a being of pure energy or anything. Sorry if that was what you were looking for. (Watch Stargate for that, they transcend all the time – also it’s a good show.)

Basically the premise seems to be that Johnny Depp is ‘uploaded’ before he dies and becomes an Artificial Intelligence. Then (just guessing from the trailer) he predictably turns evil. Seems pretty predictable but it might be good. You never know.

Star Trek: Renegades

As promised, here is the trailer and the Kickstarter campaign for the new Star Trek: Renegades web film. From the people who brought you Star Trek: Of Gods and Men. Which was great, so therefore this will be too!

Here is the trailer:

Looks pretty cool I think, although it is very hard to tell. A hot chick, some hard/smart aliens and an unlikely rag-tag band of misfit humans seems to be the main premise. I love Farscape, so it might work here as well.

There are a lot more details at the official website: Star Trek: Renegades

Go there boldly now.

Star Trek: Of Gods and Men. Full film.

Star Trek: Of Gods and Men

Star Trek: Of Gods and Men

In a depressing age when there was no Star Trek on TV, a few plucky individuals have banded together to save us all. With internet Star Trek. I’m not sure how I missed this but here is a full length film and it’s really good! I know I have recently been promoting Star Trek Continues and their Kickstarter campaign to make more episodes (which is a great cause as it’s brilliant), but this is excellent professional Trek that deserves a watch.

It is made by Trek legends Walter Koenig (Chekov from Original Trek) and Tim Russ (Tuvok from Star Trek Voyager). There seems to be a ridiculous amount of other Star Trek actors in it as well. (See below the video where there is more info about the cast.) I post it now as they want to make a new one. More about that later but there is a mini trailer at the start of this film.

Here is the premise of Star Trek: Of Gods and Men:

Forty years after their first mission, Chekov and Uhura, along with John Harriman, former Captain of the Enterprise-B, come together for the dedication of a very special ship.

However, their reunion is cut short when they receive a distress call from an all-too-familiar planet, where they meet up with an almost-forgotten face, and in an instant something happens, or rather, doesn’t happen, that presses the three friends to embark on a mission that will forever change their lives…

I love all these new Star Treks. Thanks to technology the effects are pretty good; certainly a lot better than a lot of TV scifi when I was growing up. Also, the actors are easily as good as the original cast – or like here, the same actual cast as in the original shows. I’d like to say ‘Keep it up!’ but they already are. I will post details and trailer for their new movie kickstarter campaign in my next post.

So brace yourself and grab a Romulan ale. Here is Star Trek: Of Gods and Men. Engage.

Here is more on the cast:
The film stars Walter Koenig, Nichelle Nichols (Uhura and Chekov of the original series) and Alan Ruck (Captain John Harriman of the 7th Trek feature film, Star Trek Generations) along with Grace Lee Whitney (Janice Rand of the original series). Joining them are Garrett Wang (Star Trek: Voyager) and Ethan Phillips (Star Trek: Voyager as well as Star Trek: The Next Generation); Cirroc Lofton, Chase Masterson and JG Hertzler (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine), Gary Graham and Crystal Allen (Star Trek: Enterprise), Herb Jefferson (Battlestar Galactica) plus Tim Russ (reprising his role as Tuvok from Star Trek: Voyager), who also directs the film.

Producer Sky Conway and Deep Space Nine freelance storywriters Jack Trevino and Ethan H. Calk wrote OGAM. Director of photography is Doug Knapp. More than 50 film professionals (all Star Trek fans) have worked tirelessly to produce this labor of love! Originally released in three parts on the internet in 2008, this film is presented to you as a full 90 minute movie.
